Swimming-bath Scene

Swimming-bath Scene, 1973 (signed and dated)
Pencil and watercolour, squared, 19 cm x 13.5 cm

This is probably the work exhibited as 'Swimming-bath scene' among the 'Vignettes' at Reading in 1983, although it is a little larger than the overall range of sizes from 6.5 x 4.5 cm to 18.0 x 12.5 cm quoted for such works in the Reading catalogue. It is also presumably the watercolour 'Swimming Bath Scene 1975' exhibited by Gillian Jason Gallery in 1993, when the date seems to have been misread and the size quoted, equivalent to 19 x 43.2 cm, seems to indicate an improbable format. Roberts revisited this composition five years later to produce the oil The Swimmers in 1978.
