'"Fritz's" artillery was especially active at night, firing with a method known as "searching and sweeping", aiming first in a direct line, then so many degrees left and right, seeking to cut our supply routes, as it was under cover of darkness that our ammunition and food reached us' – Roberts, Memories of the War to End War 1914–18.
