Jockeys Mounting – study (aka Before the Race), c.1949
Pencil, squared, 18.5 cm x 13.5 cm

A date of '1928–30' had been suggested by John Roberts in 1988, but the style is consistent with Roberts's work of the late 1940s and it is now apparent that this drawing is a study for the watercolour Jockeys Mounting (see below) exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1949.
