The Guitarist (John), 1943

Having played the oboe at school and university – cf. Oboe Players 1937 – William Roberts's son, John, took up the classical guitar in the early 1940s. Although never a really proficient player, he gave recitals and for a time performed at the Mandrake club in Soho. He wrote extensively about the guitar and its history, and made frequent visits to Spain, attending and, in his book Guitar Travels (1977), documenting the guitar courses of the composer, performer and teacher Emilio Pujol.
