The Interval

The Interval (aka The Box?), 1923 (signed and dated and inscribed 'The Interval')
Pencil and black chalk, 58.4 cm x 40.6 cm

Similar in style and finish to The Connoisseur 1923, this is probably the drawing entitled The Box that was exhibited with that work at the Chenil Galleries in 1923 and priced at the same amount (£25). As with The Connoisseur, the drawing may depict figures from the London art world: the plump, balding man seated at the back seems to resemble Sir Cyril Butler, a former patron of Roberts and a founder, treasurer and later chairman of the Contemporary Art Society; but who the other figures might then be is not known.
PROVENANCE: Mr and Mrs Sidney L. Bernstein > Phillips 12 June 1990 (£9,500) > ? > Sotheby's 23 Nov. 2022 (£529,200)
EXHIBITION HISTORY: Chenil Galleries 1923 (as The Box)?, The Fleming Collection 2009
