'An imaginative composition, not done with any particular place in mind. It was painted for the Contemporary Art Society at the suggestion of Wilfrid Evill, who was one of the buyers for the year: Mr Evill told Roberts that, if he painted a picture specially for the CAS, he would buy it from him' – Tate Gallery 1965 catalogue.
