Gas Attack at Ypres

The First German Gas Attack at Ypres – study (aka Gas Attack at Ypres), 1918
Pencil, pen, ink, red chalk and coloured wash, squared, 43 cm x 34 cm

'Roberts first essayed the composition vertically in his "realistic" style, with some distortions for expressionistic effect but careful attention to the details of the Canadian soldiers' uniforms. Since the final canvas was to be horiziontal and huge (10 x 12 feet), he transposed the composition to the NGC sheet, extending it to the right' – Douglas E. Schoenherr, British Drawings from the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa: National Gallery of Canada, 2005)
PROVENANCE: Sotheby's 9 Mar. 1921
EXHIBITION HISTORY: Maclean Gallery 1980 (as Gas Attack at Ypres)
