PROVENANCE: WR > Tom Alexander. In 1957 Tom Alexander, living on the Isle of Arran in Scotland, wrote to WR, as he had written to other artists, including Moore, Hepworth, Sutherland, Piper, Pasmore, Hitchens and Lowry, saying he had £40 to spend and asking if he could possibly buy a representative work for that amount. Roberts sent studies of four paintings so that Alexander could choose the oil of one of them. The other three studies were Donald Wolfit as King Lear at the 'Old Bedford'; 1949, a study for The Ferry 1944, and The Ballet c.1932.
