After studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, Dykes (18801957) taught in HM Gunnery and Torpedo Schools, Portsmouth, in 19036 before returning to Cambridge as a lecturer (190637). He was tutor of Trinity College 191933 and proctor of Cambridge University 191215 and 192732, as well as holding various industrial appointments.
