Keeper of the Apes, 1958
Pen and watercolour, 34.5 cm x 25 cm

Frontispiece for Roberts, Vorticism and the Politics of Belles-Lettres-ism (Vortex Pamphlet No. 5). In the catalogue of the 1980 Maclean Gallery exhibition, Elizabeth Cayzer notes that 'Following the Tate Gallery Exhibition, Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism (1956), William Roberts conducted a satirical campaign (both literary and pictorial) against his fellow-Vorticist's claim (in the catalogue's foreword) that: "Vorticism, in fact, was what I, personally, did, and said, at a certain period." Wyndham Lewis wrote The Apes of God in 1930.' See the bibliography on this website for Roberts's writings on this subject.
